another cheap laptop desk option. gino from the netherlands used the ikea variera kitchen shelf (can't find the link on ikea website) which fits his MacBook to a T."since the shelf itself is perforated, it helps to cool the bottom of those overheating notebooks. i ended up mounting the shelf upside down on its legs (pix below does not show this as it is a composite picture using the original variera). this prevents the notebook from falling off the shelf should you push against it from the front or the back."

usually there are some wires and a mini bungee cord cluttering the look of the thingThis was made from some plexi and an Ikea paper towel holder that I had laying around. I drilled some holes in the stainless steel crosspiece (don't try this without a drill press and graduated high speed bits). I counterbored 4 screws into the plexi and bolted it together. It works and looks good. There is some bounce due to the springiness of the thin steel. This setup allows me to use a keyboard, tablet and maintain proper ergonomics. I also strap a miniature bungee cord just below the keyboard, mostly for peace of mind.

Belkin released a Laptop Cooling Stand at Macworld this week, designed to help keep laptops cooler when in use, and possibly in response to recent problems with overheating batteries in some laptops.
The Belkin laptop stand has a curved design to allow additional airflow below the machine and also has a built-in fan that pushes air up, according to TechDigest. Due to this, we are not sure if the purpose of the stand is to cool the laptop or your lap, but either way the increased airflow would bring fresh cool air up to the machine and keep the hot air away from your legs.
The fan runs off of the USB port on your notebook so it doesn’t require an electrical outlet and will no doubt suck it’s share of juice from your battery. The Laptop cooling stand is expected to go for around $30 and should be coming out towards the end of February.

Laptops can be borrowed at the Edmon Low Library Circulation Desk.
Everyone must sign a Statement of Responsibility before using the laptops.
Users are responsible for a laptop while it is checked out to them and will be charged for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment.
A fee sheet is attached to the Statement of Responsibility.
You will receive a copy of the Statement of Responsibility in the mail.
Student Laptops
The loan period is five hours.
Laptops cannot be renewed.
Applications and software can be installed on the laptop.
The laptops are setup with Drive Shield.
Drive Shield will erase all data each time the computer is rebooted
Please do not leave the laptop unsupervised.
Return laptops to circulation staff do not leave on the counter.

Here's another dual-core ultraportable to add to your
drool-list (probably just due to its looks): LG's latest superslim
XNOTE laptop, the 14.1-inch T1. Unfortunately you'll probably
never see this piano black, 21.5-millimeter thick notebook over
here in the States, which is a shame considering how many
features they managed to cram into just a 4.2-pound package,
most notably a dual-layer DVD burner, 5-in-1 media card reader,
plus Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g. Performance, though,
is nothing to write home about, with the low end L2300 1.5GHz
Centrino Duo processor, integrated graphics, and pokey 4200RPM
60GB or 80GB PATA drives probably making this model a
non-starter for gamers or serious multitaskers. For simple web
browsing, emailing, or DVD watching on-the-go, however, the
512MB to 2GB of RAM and optional 1,440 x 900 WXGA+ screen

Surpassing Samsung's X11 as the thinnest laptop on the market, LG's XNote T1 measures a mere 21mm and weighs in at just over 1.9kg. Wow! Despite being so thin and light LG have still managed to endow the XNote T1 with a 14" widescreen capable of resolutions up to 1440x900. This laptop doesn't appear short on features either with a built-in memory card reader, fingerprint sensor, dvd burner, wifi and bluetooth with a Centrino Duo under the hood. Who are they for?
Business notebooks are targeted at mobile professionals and IT managers seeking a stable, secure platform.

What to Expect:

Security & Protection
To us, a true business notebook should offer a TPM security module for network authentication, as well as a fingerprint reader or SmartCard support to decrease the likelihood of stolen data while eliminating the need to remember multiple passwords. An included suite of utilities should tie all of these features together to make things easy on the user as well as the IT manager.

Durability
Business notebooks should be built to last, with a strong magnesium alloy frame and a hard drive protection system that includes shock absorption in case of a fall. We consider spill-proof keyboards to be a nice bonus in this category.

Standard Displays
Some vendors are starting to introduce widescreen notebooks into their business lines to appeal to end users, but for the most part you’ll find standard aspect ratio displays. Also keep in mind that business notebooks tend to avoid trendier glossy displays in favor of an anti-reflective coating.

Shared Accessories
Since business notebooks are often bought in large volume, be sure that the vendor you choose offers port replicators, extended batteries, docking systems, and other accessories that can be used across the product line.

Modular Bays
Business notebooks should allow workers the flexibility to swap out an optical drive, for example, to insert an extra battery or hard drive for more storage.

Long Life Spans
Business notebooks tend to be on the market for at least 15 months before any significant update, compared with 9 months or less for consumer systems. This is to give peace of mind to IT managers and CIOs who don’t want to have to deal with the management headaches of frequent platform transitions.

The ultraportable is the smallest traditional notebook design.

They typically weigh less than four pounds and measure
no more than an inch thick.

Who are they for?
These laptops are designed for road warriors—mobile
professionals who travel constantly and need just enough
computing power with them at all times.

What to Expect:

Fast-Enough Performance
Expect a CPU that will let you get your work done
but not much else. These laptops typically come with
processors that range from 1 GHz to 1.8 GHz and
include 256MB to 512MB of RAM. If you’re looking for
maximum battery life, opt for a notebook with Intel’s Ultra
Low Voltage processor inside.

Small Displays
When it comes to ultraportables, small screens are a plus
for frequent flyers or commuters who don’t have a lot of
workspace. Most of these systems come with displays that
range from 10.6 to 13.3 inches. On the other hand, you’ll be
doing a lot squinting unless you use the zoom function in the
applications you use most, such as Word.

All Work, Little Play
Don’t expect to play 3D games. Virtually all ultraportable
laptops use integrated video chips with shared memory
instead of discrete graphics with dedicated video memory.
In other words, be happy with your DVDs.

Optical Drives Not Always Standard
Many ultraportables have only one spindle—a hard drive
(sizes typically range from 20GB to 40GB). But an increasing
number of models squeeze a DVD/CD-RW or DVD burner
drive into their cases. The trade-off is weight. Ultraportables
without optical drives can weigh less than two pounds,
but those that do have them tend to weigh three pounds or more.

Pick Your Ports
Ultraportables don't have space for lots of ports, but you can
expect at least a couple of USB 2.0 ports, video output for
presentations, Ethernet, and a headphone jack. A memory
card reader of some kind is considered a bonus for this class.

Somewhat Cramped Keyboards
Ultraportables are notorious for having small keyboards,
which is a necessary trade-off for their compact frames.
However, some vendors do a much better job than others
when it comes to making their layouts smart enough to
prevent typos. Touch typists should avoid ultraportables
with shrunken right Shift keys.

Great Battery Life
Since ultraportables don’t expend a lot of energy with
power-hungry applications, you can expect a battery life

Performance & Long Battery Life
Both Intel's Pentium M and Core Duo
mobile processors, as well as AMD's
Turion 64, offer very good performance.
Clock speeds generally range from 1.5 to
2 GHz, and we recommend at least 512MB
of RAM. If you want four hours or
more of battery life on a charge, look for
the Centrino sticker. If there’s an extended
battery option, get it.

Just-Right Displays
Most thin-and-lights sport 14-inch displays,
which is fine for viewing everything from
e-mail and Web pages to Word and Excel docs.
The vast majority of systems in this category
now feature widescreens, which offer enough
real estate for everything from multitasking
with multiple windows open to DVD playback.

DVD Burners on the Cheap
All thin-and-lights usually come standard
with a combo DVD/CD-RW optical drive,
but more and more vendors are starting
to throw in a DVD burner for as little
as $75. If you’re into making home movies
or backing
up lots of data to disc, it’s worth the
small premium. If not, skip the burner.

The Right Mix of Ports
You won't find as many as in desktop
replacements, but you will often encounter
three or four USB 2.0 ports for connecting
all sorts of peripherals and in many cases

a FireWire port, which is great for importing
video from a digital camcorder. If you’re into
digital photography, get a system with a memory
card reader, preferably one that can handle
three or more formats.

Good-Enough Graphics
The big question facing buyers is whether
you want to go the integrated or discrete
graphics route. Intel's latest Graphics Media
Adapter chip, which you'll often find in
this category, delivers smooth movie playback
but no firepower for gameplay. Graphics
adapters from ATI and Nvidia let you
play games when the workday ends, albeit
at a much lower setting that doesn’t take
advantage of all the graphical power the latest games boast.

at least 1GB of RAM and 100GB or more of hard drive space.
Those who want to access data quickly should look beyond
5,400-rpm drives to those with rotational speeds of 7,200 rpms.
All this power comes with a cost though, as the average battery
life won’t exceed two hours.

Fast DVD Burning, Even on Both Sides
Because desktop replacements can use desktop-class
components, the majority of systems in this category offer
DVD burners that can burn at 8X speeds. If you’re willing to
pay a little extra money, a dual layer burner gives you double
the capacity for videos and other files.

Graphics Galore
Most desktop replacements come with excellent mobile graphics
chips from ATI or Nvidia that handle multimedia apps with aplomb.
In fact, some models offer 128MB or more of dedicated video
memory for super-fast gameplay.

Extra Ports
Look for at least four USB 2.0 ports (in some cases there
will be five or more), a FireWire port, and a memory card
reader that can accept multiple formats. A DVI output useful
if you want to output your notebook’s video signal to an even
larger display, and an S/PDIF output is recommended for
those who want to hook their desktop replacement up to a surround
sound speaker system.

Love it or hate it, Windows Vista is here to stay as the default operating system for those buying PC laptops on the market today. We all know Vista requires more hardware power, such as 2GB of RAM being almost a necessity to get decent performance, but are there Vista OS and software tweaks you can do to improve performance without buying better hardware? There certainly are, and our forum members are working together to collect them all.

1. Disable TMM

This tweak is responsible for about a 3-5 second delay and blank screen flash when you start Vista. It searches for external monitors but is unnecessary.

If you are not using an external monitor, or don't switch back and forth always then turn TMM off. This is responsible for a 3-5 second pause and blank flash you get when turning your computer on.

2. Use TuneXP 1.5 (TY and Rep Trebuin)

This little XP program works great on Vista and reduces your boot time by reorganizing it. The program is phenomenal and has no side effects except a much quicker start speed. As you get more knowledgeable, there are a bunch of other great utilities in the program. Basically, it takes all your boot files and places them at the front of the disk.

This is the best tweak in our arsenal as there are several reports that it will cut your start time in half. I have verified this with my Vista 64-bit startup (20 seconds) and have cut my sons 32-bit Vista startup time in half to 40 seconds.

I use it on both my Vista 32 and 64 bit systems and it works great. Word to the wise though, dont use later versions. This version is the only tested for this.

Install the program and if asked to select a drive, select 'C'
Go to Memory and File System and Click on Ultra-Fast booting (it may appear to freeze but it's working)
Once it's done, it will inform you not to reboot your system until defragmentation is complete
Bring up your Task Manager from your system tray by right clicking in the tray bottom right and select Task Manager
Go to processes
You will see two processes relating to defrag. Dont restart your machine until they dissappear.

3. Disable Vista Search Indexing

All versions of Vista have Search Indexing enabled by default which is an unneeded resource for most. Its function is to continuously update files on your system so that they can be made available for faster searching. Unfortunately, this takes its toll on system performance which is why its listed in several tweaking programs as a top teak; I agree totally.

To disable Windows indexing:

Click Start, then computer;
Right click on Local Disk 'C:'
Left click on Properties;
Uncheck 'Index this Drive for Faster Searching';
Let it complete and select 'Include subfolders and files' in any subsequent dialog box

From here we will go one step further and turn off Windows Search in your services

Click on start/run and type in 'MSConfig' and hit ok
Click on Services tab and find Windows Search
Uncheck/Apply and Ok, you're done!!!

If you think you'll need search, don't mess with this, but if not it's a great way to speedup your system.

4. Get CCleaner, it Works with 32/64Bit

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and Free!

It cleans the following:

Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat
Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Log files
Recently opened URLs and files
Third-party application temp files and recent file lists (MRUs)
Including: Firefox, Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office XP, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and more...

It also contains an 'Advanced Registry Scanner' and cleaner to remove unused and old entries to include File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more...

There is also a Windows Startup editor as well as a back-up tool just in case you delete something your not supposed to.

5. Turn Off User Account Control (UAC)

This tweak is best followed after a 'clean' install with respect to the below listed advisory.

One of the most annoying things in Vista is the protection of your system through UAC. Before I knew how to disable it I considered throwing the system out the window. The purpose of UAC is to make you confirm a large number of everyday functions in order to somehow protect your system from malware infections. In any case heres how to shut it off (or turn it back on).

Click on start and then click on your username picture top right of the start menu.
Click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off.'
Uncheck (or check) User Account Control, select ok and restart.

Thats it except...

There needs to be a word of caution in turning UAC on and off. There is a process called virtualization that, when UAC is 'on' saves program data files (things like INI files, configuration files, saved game files etc.) within a totally separate area for each individual user. If you then turn UAC off, there have been reports that certain programs may be unable to find that saved data. The truth, in fact, is that the data is still there but only visible to the program in this 'virtualization folder' once UAC has been turned on again.

An example is... If UAC is on and you install some game, and the game then saves files to that program's main directory and subsequently you turn UAC off. Those files may appear to the game that they have been deleted when, in all actuality, they are stored in this folder and only accessible through virtualization when UAC is on.

6. Turn Off Unused Windows Features

This tweak is actually a 'two in one' as it saves disk space by turning off unneeded windows features as well as improving performance by shutting down Remote Differential Compression (RDC). Briefly, RDC monitors changes in files in order to transfer them with minimum compression over a network, thus eliminating the transfer of an entire file which has been already moved. This checking and rechecking can hinder system performance. With respect to the other features that I will suggest shutting off, I myself only leave Games, Ultimate Extras (both self explanatory) and Tablet PC. I choose to leave tablet PC as it enables a little feature called Snipping Tool which I absolutely love. Anyone who hasn't used it, type 'snipping tool' in the 'Run' box and enjoy.

In any case, the tweak is as follows:

Press Start/Control Panel/Classic View and select Programs and Features
Choose 'Turn Windows Features On and Off
You can safely unselect 'Indexing Service, Remote Differential Compression, Tablet PC Optional Components (if you don't want Snipping Tool), Windows DFS Replication Service, Windows Fax & Scan (unless you use Fax through a modem) and Windows Meeting Space.

And if you want to be really smart, DFS Replication duplicates files for use among multiple PCs in a network and keeps them in sync. It's not very useful on a stand alone.

7. Windows Snipping Tool IS AMAZING!

I let the cat out of the bag in the last tweak for #6, so I figured I might as well spill the beans. If you have Vista Premium or above you have a great new tool called Snipping Tool. It enables you to freeze whatever is on your screen and take a picture of it. You may notice that I use this in tons of my threads as it is so easy.

To get to it...

Click Start/All Programs/Accessories and you'll find the tool there, or...
Start 'Run' and type 'snippingtool'.

NOTE: If you delete Tablet PC features from Vista, this will not work!

8. Eliminate Unneeded Startup Programs

When your computer starts, there are a number of programs that start automatically and remain running in the background which steal away much needed memory. They add up in time and although many have no real use to the average user, others can be eliminated from starting automatically and started from the 'All Programs' or 'Quick Launch' menu as required. My best example of this is Messenger (or AIM/ICQ) which starts and hogs valuable resources even when your not using it.

First lets see how to get there to see what we have shall we?

Type 'msconfig' in the Run command (or Windows key + R)
Press Start/Control Panel/Admin Tools/System Configuration/Startup; or
Download this excellent freeware program called Startup Inspector

I personally like the program for the new user because it has a consultant which, not only tells you what each program is, but also tells you which are required by the system, user chosen, recommended, not required or unknown.

Now what can we disable and eliminate from the startup process? This is much an individual choice but I personally have shut down all that start with 'NVIDIA, Messenger, Office, Nwiz, quicktime". Be careful not to turn off important processes, when in doubt don't disable a process, but if it's something obvious and you know you don't want it then disable it.

One Laptop per Child:Technology

The XO-1 will be low-cost, small, durable, and efficient. It will be shipped with a slimmed-down version of Fedora Linux and a GUI called Sugar that is intended to help young children collaborate. The XO-1 includes a video camera, a microphone, long-range Wi-Fi, and a hybrid stylus/touch pad. Human power is planned, allowing operation far from commercial sources of power.

Mary Lou Jepsen has stated the design goals of this device as:

minimal power consumption, with a design target of 2–3 W total power consumption;
minimal production cost, with a target of $100 per laptop for production runs of millions of units;
a ‘cool’ look, implying innovative styling in its physical appearance;
e-book functionality with extremely low power consumption;
the software provided with the laptop should be open source and free software.

Various use models had been explored by OLPC with the help of Design Continuum and Fuseproject, including: laptop, e-book, theatre, simulation, tote, and tablet architectures. The current design, by Fuseproject, uses a transformer hinge to morph between laptop, e-book, and router modes.

OLPC is based on constructionist learning theories pioneered by Seymour Papert, Alan Kay, and also on the principles expressed in Nicholas Negroponte’s book Being Digital.The founding corporate members are Google, News Corp, AMD, Red Hat, Brightstar and Nortel, each of whom donated two million dollars to the project. All three individuals and six companies are active participants in OLPC.

The organization gained much attention when Nicholas Negroponte and Kofi Annan unveiled a working prototype of the CM1 on November 16, 2005 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia. Negroponte showed two prototypes of the laptop at the second phase of the World Summit: a non working physical model and a tethered version using an external board and separate keyboard. The device shown was a rough prototype using a standard development board. Negroponte estimated that the screen alone required three more months of development. The first working prototype was demonstrated at the project's Country Task Force Meeting on May 23, 2006. The production version is expected to have a larger display screen in the same size package. The laptops were scheduled to be available by early 2007.

Production prototype (4th generation) - functional survey

At the 2006 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) announced it would back the laptop. UNDP released a statement saying they would work with OLPC to deliver “technology and resources to targeted schools in the least developed countries”.

The OLPC board of directors announced on December 13, 2005 that Quanta Computers had been chosen as the original design manufacturer (ODM) for the $100 laptop project. The decision was made after the board reviewed bids from several possible manufacturing companies. The company emphasized that there was a lot of work that remains to be done: “We still need to put a large amount of research and development into this, and will then hopefully be ready to make a finished product in the second half of next year 2006”, according to Quanta. Over the next six months, a team at Quanta Research Institute is going to be focusing on the $100 laptop.

The project originally aimed for a price of 100 United States dollars. In May 2006, Negroponte told the Red Hat's annual user summit: “It is a floating price. We are a nonprofit organization. We have a target of $100 by 2008, but probably it will be $135, maybe $140. That is a start price, but what we have to do is with every release make it cheaper and cheaper— we are promising that the price will go down.”

One Laptop per Child:Children's Machine

The XO-1, previously known as the $100 Laptop or , is an inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge. The laptop is developed by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) social welfare organization. OLPC is a U.S. based, non-profit organization, 501(c)(4) created by faculty members of the MIT Media Lab to design, manufacture, and distribute the laptop and its software.

These rugged, low-power computers contain flash memory instead of a hard drive and use Linux as their operating system. Mobile ad-hoc networking is used to allow many machines Internet access from one connection.

The laptops can be sold to governments and issued to children by schools on a basis of one laptop per child. Pricing is currently expected to start at around US$135–175 and the goal is to reach the US$100 mark in 2008. Approximately 500 developer boards (Alpha-1) were distributed in summer 2006; 875 working prototypes (Beta 1) were delivered in late 2006; 2400 Beta-2 machines were distributed at the end of February 2007; full-scale production is expected to start in mid-2007. Quanta Computer, the project's contract manufacturer, said in February 2007 that it had confirmed orders for one million units. They indicated they could ship 5 million to 10 million units this year because seven nations have committed to buy the XO-1 for their schoolchildren, including Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Thailand and Uruguay.

The OLPC project has stated that a consumer version of the XO laptop is not planned. However, Quanta will be offering machines very similar to the XO machine on the open market. Emerging competitors in the category include the ASUS Eee PC.

For a given price range (and manufacturing base), laptop computational power has traditionally trailed that of desktops. This is partly due to most laptops sharing RAM between the program memory and the graphics adapter. By virtue of their usage goals, laptops prioritize energy efficiency and compactness over absolute performance. Desktop computers and their modular components are built to fit much bigger standard enclosures, along with the expectation of AC line power. As such, energy efficiency and portability for desktops are secondary design goals compared to absolute performance.

For typical home (personal use) applications, where the computer spends the majority of its time sitting idle for the next user input, laptops of the thin-client type or larger are generally fast enough to achieve the required performance. 3D gaming, multimedia (video) encoding and playback, and analysis-packages (database, math, engineering, financial, etc.) are areas where desktops still offer the casual user a compelling advantage.

With the advent of dual-core processors and perpendicular recording, laptops are beginning to close the performance gap with PCs. Intel's Core 2 line of processors is efficient enough to be used in portable computers, and many manufacturers such as Apple Computer and Dell are building Core 2 based laptops. Also, many high end laptop computers feature mobility versions of graphics cards, eliminating the performance losses associated with integrated graphics.

Laptop History

In the 1970s, Alan Kay of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center had a vision for a wireless portable computer roughly the size of a notebook. He called it the Dynabook. Kay's Dynabook never got past sketches and a cardboard model, but it set the wheels in motion for the development of a truly portable computer.

In 1979, William Moggridge of Grid Systems Corporation created the first functioning portable computer: The Grid Compass Computer 1109. It had 340 kilobytes of bubble memory, a die-cast magnesium case and a folding electroluminescent graphics display screen. NASA bought a handful of them at $800 apiece for use in the space program.

An IBM ThinkPad

Other companies, like Gavilan Computer and Apple, introduced other portable computers in following years. The first commercially viable machine, however, was the IBM PC Convertible, introduced in 1986. The PC Convertible featured:

An 8088 microprocessor
256 kilobytes of memory
Two 3.5-inch (8.9-cm) floppy drives
An LCD display
Parallel and serial printer ports
Space for an internal modem
A software suite including basic word processing, appointment calendar, telephone/address book, and calculator software

Weighing in at a hefty 12 lbs (5.4 kg), the PC Convertible sold for $3,500. It was the first portable computer with the clamshell design used in today's laptops. The success of the PC Convertible was the catalyst for competitors like Compaq and Toshiba to switch to the clamshell design in their portable computers. And so began the era of the laptop computer.

- A laptop computer, usually called a notebook computer by manufacturers, is a battery- or AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conveniently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. A laptop typically weighs less than 5 pounds and is 3 inches or less in thickness. Among the best-known makers of laptop computers are IBM, Apple, Compaq, Dell, and Toshiba.

Laptop computers generally cost more than desktop computers with the same capabilities because they are more difficult to design and manufacture. A laptop can effectively be turned into a desktop computer with a docking station, a hardware frame that supplies connections for peripheral input/output devices such as a printer or larger monitor. The less capable port replicator allows you to connect a laptop to a number of peripherals through a single plug.

Laptops usually come with displays that use thin-screen technology. The thin film transistor or active matrix screen is brighter and views better at different angles than the STN or dual-scan screen. Laptops use several different approaches for integrating a mouse into the keyboard, including the touch pad, the trackball, and the pointing stick. A serial port also allows a regular mouse to be attached. The PC Card is insertable hardware for adding a modem or network interface card to a laptop. CD-ROM and digital versatile disc drives may be built-in or attachable.
